Another ¡VAMOS! test mine site investigated
During the first week of April a ¡VAMOS! team performed another visit to a possible test mine site. This time Bosnia was our host. The equipment builders and the geology experts from Bosnia and Slovenia within the team, presented the goals and plans of ¡VAMOS! to local stakeholders other interested people at the nearby municipality hall. The presentation was hosted by the society of regional development FORVV, also partner within ¡VAMOS!
Questions, and possible issues were being raised with regard to the foreseen testing activities as well as the interest of inland submerged mining for opportunities for future development of mining in the region. Next, the (currently abandoned) mine site itself was investigated, to asses specific circumstances and to obtain as much data as possible needed to prepare any future trial, to validate the design of the equipment with regard to the mine site requirements, and to asses possible risks and associated suitable mitigation measures.
An evaluation of all acquired data will be taken into account in the selection process of test sites, which are due to take place from mid 2017. The locally available knowledge and documentation about the site’s exploitation history and the nearby availability of associated facilities for the test campaign will surely support this evaluation in a positive way. The first impression is that the site would contribute well to the project’s ultimate aim to prove the viability of the ¡VAMOS! concept. From the EU’s raw materials strategy perspective the experience acquired from this site visit alone will already be beneficial, as the EU is very interested in collaborating with non-EU countries. The team members present at this important project event, can witness the cooperative and constructive intention of Bosnian stakeholders at all levels.
